Elephant Experiences

A mere thirty minutes drive away from Rosyth, the elephant orphanage was established in 1975 by the Department of Wildlife Conservation on a 25-acre (10 ha) coconut plantation on the Maha Oya river. The orphanage was originally founded in order to afford care and protection to the many orphaned elephants found in the jungle.

Today, the orphanage is seen by many visitors as a commercial operation, but remains a top attraction for visitors young and old seeking to get close to elephants. Whilst the baby feeding is popular, the best experience is to watch the elephants walk through the village, followed by their daily bathing in the river. Visitors can sit comfortably in a riverside café whilst the elephants bathe and play.
